Do I have to use my own dog if I want to show dogs, or can I show someone else dog?

Hiya,, I have a small cross breed dog and I have just joined the Young kennel club,, I would like to compete in stakes and show a dog, but I dont have my own KC reg pedigree dog, could I be a handler and show someone elses dog instead of buying my own dog ? thanks
