My initial reaction is that he was still hurt from your b/f leading him on. So he did the same to you. Once you showed interest in taking the relationship further, he backed off. This is not normally something guys would do if they are interested. I'm wondering if he didn't do this as some kind of ego booster. He may have though you were a sure thing, and was trying to make your friend jealous. And when it was obvious you weren't going to be his rebound, he lost interest. I'd start looking for another guy. Maybe once you pretend you don't want him anymore, he'll show interest again. And if he doesn't show interest...well, there's your answer.
